She argued with her daughter Emily about a man Emily was dating. Although she did not know Emily was pregnant, she disapproved because the man was twice Emily’s age. Emily ran out of the house and was hit by a car, resulting in John’s premature birth. After Emily refused to raise John, Mrs. Locke initiated the process of putting John up for adoption. She began to light a cigarette but was stopped by the nurse.
When she noticed Richard Alpert at the hospital watching John, she told a nurse she did not know who he was. (“Cabin Fever”)
