Season 6

Season: 1–6, Episodes: 108, Faction: Survivors

Overview

Katherine Anne Austen, more commonly known as Kate, was one of the survivors from the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. Before the crash, Kate spent years fleeing the law after killing her abusive father. To achieve her goals, she would commit several other crimes and would turn to bank robbery, assault and seduction.

On the Island, she became an integral member of the survivors’ society, forming strong bonds with Jack and Sawyer and also becoming close with Claire and Sun. Resourceful, quick-witted and mysteriously reclusive, she participated in many missions while attempting to hide her troubled past from the rest of the survivors.

Kate was captured by the Others along with Jack and Sawyer, but she eventually escaped the Island with five other survivors. Kate went on trial for her various crimes and accepted a ten-year probation order. She was briefly engaged to Jack, but his drug and alcohol problems ended their relationship. She also raised Aaron Littleton as her son, but she finally decided to return to the island to rescue his mother, Claire.

Once she returned to the Island, Kate was stranded in 1977 with the other survivors. She worked for the DHARMA Initiative and saved a young Benjamin Linus’s life. She then time-traveled to 2007, where she found an “infected” Claire. Kate joined the Man in Black’s side, but she did not trust him. She helped Jack to kill the Man in Black and then escaped the island with Claire. Jack and Kate were reunited in the afterlife and moved on with their friends.

Kate woke in a tree, temporarily deaf. She and Miles went to the Swan site, where she ran to Jack to see if he was okay. She had to hold Sawyer back from attacking Jack. Kate then heard Juliet’s muffled calls from below, and they worked to unearth her, but she died.

6×03 – What Kate Does

Sawyer left the Temple. Kate decided to go after him, but not until after Jack told her to be safe. Kate followed Sawyer with Jin and two Others, who warned them of a new threat and saved them from one of Claire’s traps. Kate then sprung the trap in order to get away, and went to the Barracks for Sawyer while Jin looked for Sun.

Sawyer caught her sneaking into his house, then they sat on the submarine jetty together. Kate explained coming to reunite Claire with Aaron, and she apologized for Juliet’s death, but Sawyer blamed himself. He tossed Juliet’s engagement ring, which he’d never given her, into the water. Kate broke down crying. (“What Kate Does”)

6×05 – Lighthouse

6×06 – Sundown

Further on, she met Sayid. She then reached the Temple, and Miles told her Claire had arrived. Kate pinned Lennon to the wall till he brought her to Claire. Kate revealed to Claire that she’d taken Aaron and had raised him. Lennon then pulled her away.

Later, during the Temple massacre, she returned to Claire rather than escape with Miles. Claire insisted the pit was safer than outside, and the Monster appeared, sending Kate down for cover. Afterward, she took a gun from a dead Other and joined the Man in Black outside the Temple. (“Sundown”)

6×08 – Recon

He led his group to Claire’s camp, where Kate was reunited with Sawyer and Jin, then to a new campsite. As the Man spoke to the group, Claire took Kate’s hand, bewildering her.

Sawyer and Kate went a docked sailboat and boarded it with Jack, Sun, Hurley and Frank. Claire then arrived, armed with a rifle, and Kate urged her to join them, apologizing for raising Aaron. Claire came aboard and they set sail.

Sawyer briefly turned navigation to Kate so he could talk to Jack, who then jumped ship, and Sawyer refused to let her turn back for him.

The ship reached Hydra Island, where Widmore’s team captured them. (“The Last Recruit”)

6×14 – The Candidate

Sawyer took Seamus’ gun, but Widmore held a gun to Kate, forcing them all into a cage. Sawyer there explained Kate was not a candidate. The Man in Black attacked, and Kate tried to retrieve keys from Seamus’s dead body, but Jack freed them instead, and they went to the Ajira plane.

The Man in Black, having found C-4 aboard, led them to the sub, where they engaged Widmore’s men in a gun battle. Kate got shot and was carried into the submarine, but she objected as they left Claire behind. They discovered C-4 in Jack’s pack and Sawyer accidentally set it off.

Jack told Hurley to take Kate to the surface. When Jack appeared on the beach with an unconscious Sawyer, Kate ran to Jack, claiming that she couldn’t find him. He told her that Jin and Sun had died. (“The Candidate”)

6×16 – What They Died For

Jack stitched up her wound, and she reflected on Ji Yeon and told Jack that the Man in Black had to be killed. As night fell, Hurley lead the group to Jacob. He proceeded to the Heart with Jack and Desmond, and Kate caught up with them next when they were fighting at the cliffs. She shot the now-mortal man – she’d “saved a bullet” for him. Jack then resolved to return to the Heart to restart it, so she sadly asked Jack if she would ever see him again.

She kissed him and they both professed their love for one another, then they parted. She and Sawyer jumped to the water below. They swam to a boat and sailed to Hydra Island, reaching as Frank prepared to take off in the Ajira plane.

They found Claire on the beach and Kate convinced her to come along, offering to help raise Aaron. The three made it to the plane just in time and flew toward civilization. (“The End”)

After the Island

In and out of custody

6×01 – LA X, Part 1

In the flash sideways, Kate had failed to kill Wayne. Instead, her explosion killed a plumber named Ryan Millner. She was still a fugitive—America’s Most Wanted featured her—and Ed Mars again brought aboard Flight 815. She bumped into Jack when leaving the lavatory and stole his pen. (“LA X, Part 1”)

6×02 – LA X, Part 2

When they landed, she convinced Mars to let her use the bathroom, and she used the pen to try unlocking her handcuffs in a stall. Mars became suspicious, so Kate, still cuffed, knocked him unconscious and stole his gun. She fled to an elevator, where the sole other occupant recognized her from the flight and helped her step out when security entered.

Kate escaped the airport through an employee exit and a passenger sent her to the back of the cab line. Upon seeing Mars rallying security agents though, Kate panicked and jumped into another cab, urging the driver forward at gunpoint. They drove, running over a passenger’s bags, and as they left, Kate caught a glimpse of Jack. The two looked quizzically at each other. (“LA X, Part 2”)

6×03 – What Kate Does

The cab already contained a passenger—Claire—but Kate initially wouldn’t let her leave. When the driver fled the car at the next corner though, surrendering the wheel, she expelled Claire too.

Kate drove to a garage and paid a mechanic to remove her handcuffs, then went to the bathroom to change. After looking at reflection in the mirror, she looked in Claire’s bag and saw a photo of a pregnant Claire, baby clothes and a toy stuffed whale. Feeling guilty, she drove back to Claire and offered to drop her to her baby’s adoptive parents.

At their house though, they learned the adoptive father had left the mother, who no longer wanted the baby. Claire became upset and went into labor, and Kate drove her to the hospital, where Claire told her doctor to delay the delivery with drugs. Later, Kate hid in an adjoining room while two detectives questioned Claire. Claire covered for her and afterward told Kate she believed her innocent. She lent Kate a credit card, and Kate left, suggesting Claire keep the baby. (“What Kate Does”)

Charlie joined them, and he too remembered his life and death.

Leaving the concert, Kate met Jack and told him that though she stole his pen on the flight. Jack said he remembered her from elsewhere as well. She told him that she had missed him so much.
