Season 5

Season: 1–6, Episodes: 107, Faction: Survivors/Jacob/The Island

Overview

Hugo Reyes, more commonly known by his nickname “Hurley”, was one of the middle section survivors of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. Hurley’s father disappeared when he was ten and did not return until almost 17 years had gone by. During his father’s absence, Hurley developed an eating disorder, and later a traumatic accident landed him in a mental asylum where he started seeing an imaginary person. He has been overly-conscious about his sanity since. While employed at Mr. Cluck’s, Hurley won the lottery by playing the mysterious numbers. Because of a series of unfortunate incidents following his win, he believed himself to be plagued with bad luck and has searched for an answer to the curse.

On the Island, Hurley was typically happy-go-lucky and kept the spirits of his fellow survivors up. He was also a voice of reason in the group and used his common sense to solve difficult situations. Eventually, Hurley found that he could not escape the Numbers and after seeing them on the side of the Hatch, knew that opening it would be a bad idea. He struggled with being given the task of dividing up the food in the Hatch and began seeing his old imaginary friend on the Island. Later, he was captured by the Others, along with Jack, Kate, and Sawyer as a part of Michael’s betrayal, but was released to go back and warn the other survivors not to come for them. Back at camp, Hurley found an old DHARMA van which he was able to get running again with the help of Charlie, Sawyer, and Jin, restoring his and the rest of the survivors’ optimism.

After Charlie was born and Jack called the freighter for rescue, Hurley and five other survivors managed to escape the Island by using a helicopter. However, they were forced to leave everyone else behind when Ben moved the Island. Hurley tried to carry on happily with his life, but began seeing visions of Charlie off the Island. Eventually, he was readmitted to the Santa Rosa Mental Institute where he routinely conversed with Charlie and other deceased people. He was removed from Santa Rosa by Sayid, and taken to a “safe house”, where he was mistaken for a murderer. He later threw a Hot Pocket at Benjamin Linus and surrendered to authorities. Hurley was found innocent and released from prison where he was convinced by a man to return to the Island.

He boarded Ajira Flight 316 and was flashed to 1977 where he worked as a fire chief for the DHARMA Initiative. After the detonation of Jughead by Juliet, he time traveled to his original timeline. Soon afterward, the now-deceased Jacob began to appear to Hurley, first telling him to take the wounded Kate to the Temple, and then instructing him to take Jack to the Lighthouse. Hurley later acted as medium between Richard and his deceased wife Isabella.

Hurley was confirmed to be one of Jacob’s candidates by Jacob himself. He was visited and touched by Jacob while off the Island. Hurley’s name appears on the wall in the cliffside cave and the Lighthouse wheel as “8 – Reyes”. Hurley eventually took over as protector of the island for Jack and hired Ben as an adviser.

In the flash-sideways, he was finally reunited with his murdered island lover, Elizabeth “Libby” Smith and along with their friends, they moved on.

5×01 – Because You Left

En route to the safe house, Sayid informed Hurley that in the years since they left the Island, he had been working for Ben. Hurley asked whether he was on our side now, and Sayid replied, “If you ever have the misfortune to run into him, then anything he tells you, do the exact opposite.” When they arrived at the safe house, they were ambushed by three men, who Sayid killed.

Hurley was photographed by a civilian with a cell phone camera holding a gun with a shirt covered in “blood” (in actuality, just ketchup) while standing over the body of one of Sayid’s victims. Hurley was branded a murderer by the media, as Jack and Ben saw on the news in their hotel room. (“Because You Left”)

5×02 – The Lie

In panic, Hurley drove off with an unconscious Sayid (who had been hit by a poison dart during the confrontation at the safe house). He started to drive erratically, and was pulled over by a cop, who turned out to be a hallucination of the late Ana Lucia. She advised him to buy a new shirt and stay away from the cops. As she walked away, she told Hurley that “Libby says hi.”

Hurley stopped at a gas station and bought an “I Heart my Shih-Tzu” T-shirt, from the limited selection. He was recognized by the station attendant as the lottery winner and a member of the Oceanic 6. He went to his parents’ house and allowed his father to bring Sayid to Jack for medical help. Hurley, sick of lying to the world, told his mother that the Oceanic 6 lied, and told her everything that really happened on the Island. His mother replied, “I don’t understand you, but I believe you.”

Later that night, Hurley was heating up a Hot Pocket when Ben appeared behind him, and tried to convince Hurley to join him and return to the Island. Hurley paused, remembering what Sayid had told him earlier, and yelled, “Never, dude!” He bolted out the back door toward the cops outside watching the house, confessed to the killings Sayid committed, believing this was the only way he would be safe from Ben. As he was being handcuffed, Hurley smiled at a shocked and dismayed Ben. (“The Lie”)

5×04 – The Little Prince

In jail in an orange jumpsuit, Hurley seemed very happy with where he was. He called Jack to ask him if his dad dropped Sayid off and if he was okay. Hurley also said to tell Sayid he did exactly what he said (doing the opposite from what Ben tells him), and that Ben could never get to him now.

Later, Ben had a meeting with his lawyer. He told him that they didn’t have a solid case against Hurley because the man found outside Santa Rose Hospital was killed before Hurley escaped. Norton said the judge would never convict Hurley, and that he would be a free man. (“The Little Prince”)

5×17 – The Incident, Part 2

Hurley was released from prison. He tried to convince the guard that he shouldn’t be released because he was a murderer but the guard said that he’s been discharged and should go to a cab standing in front of the building. Hurley shared a cab with Jacob. There was also a guitar case in the cab. Jacob then revealed that he knew Hurley’s name. Hurley figured he was a ghost but he said he wasn’t dead. He asked Hurley why he wouldn’t go back to the island and Hurley said he believed he was cursed and has caused all of the death and tragedy that has surrounded him.

Jacob told him he was blessed to have the ability to speak with the dead and that he was not crazy. He told Hurley about Ajira Flight 316 and that all he had to do was be on that plane. As Jacob left the cab Hurley told him he left his guitar but Jacob said it wasn’t his guitar. (“The Incident, Part 2”)

5×06 – 316

Hurley was next seen with the guitar case booking a ticket for Flight 316, as well as buying the rest of the unsold tickets. On the plane, he took issue with the fact that Ben was also on the flight, but Jack was able to calm his nerves, saying that if they were going back to the Island, Ben was coming with them.

When the turbulence started, Hurley warned Caesar, who was sitting next to him, to buckle his seat belt before the light flashed. (“316”)

1977

5×06 – 316

After Jack woke up in the middle of the jungle, he found Hurley and Kate at the waterfall, with the rest of the passengers of the flight nowhere to be seen. They heard music nearby and spotted a DHARMA van coming to the side of the lagoon. The van stopped, and Jin stepped out with a rifle, wearing a DHARMA suit. (“316”)

5×08 – LaFleur

Shortly after, Jin took Hurley along with Jack and Kate to the North Valley where they were reunited with Sawyer. (“LaFleur”)

5×09 – Namaste

Hurley, along with Kate and Jack, returned with Sawyer to pose as new DHARMA Initiative recruits, working under the guise of a chef. (“Namaste”)

5×10 – He’s Our You

In the DHARMA cafeteria, Hurley brought Kate and Jack some breakfast. He revealed to Kate that Sawyer and Juliet are a couple. (“He’s Our You”)

5×11 – Whatever Happened, Happened

After Ben was shot and Sayid escaped, Sawyer ordered Miles to keep Jack, Kate and Hurley under house arrest. While there, Hurley kept looking at his hand to see if he was disappearing. When Miles questioned him, Hurley said that if “Little Ben” died, then he wouldn’t grow up and become “Big Ben” and make them come back to the Island, and because of that, they wouldn’t exist.

Miles then explained the “Whatever Happened, Happened” theory and they started a discussion about time travel. Hurley finally asked why big Ben, while being tortured by Sayid in 2004, didn’t remember being shot by that same guy 30 years earlier. Miles was stumped. Later, Juliet came into the house looking for Jack and dismissed Hurley and Miles. They left, friendly and still debating the issue. (“Whatever Happened, Happened”)

5×13 – Some Like It Hoth

While Miles was secretly bringing a body to The Orchid, Hurley insisted they carpool, as he was bringing the crew there lunch. Hurley smelled and discovered the body and Miles told him what really happened to it. Hurley realized that Miles could talk to the dead, and shared that he could too.

When Dr. Chang saw that Miles had brought Hurley along and also knew about the body, he was not happy. Hurley kept the secret under the threat of polar bear cleaning duty. Miles then let Hurley in on the fact that Dr. Chang was his dad. The three of them went to a hidden construction site where Hurley overheard two workers putting the serial number on a metal door for this new station.

After overhearing the infamous numbers Hurley revealed to Miles that they were building “our hatch”, referring to The Swan. On the way back, Hurley tried to get Miles to talk about his dad, but Miles was angry and stole Hurley’s notebook, in which he had written the script for The Empire Strikes Back, with a few changes. Hurley noted that the year is 1977, and Star Wars had just been released. He figured he was doing George Lucas a favor by writing the sequel. Hurley also told Miles about his own troubled relationship with his father, and how he forgave him. He suggested Miles try to gain a relationship with his own father. (“Some Like It Hoth”)

5×14 – The Variable

The next day, after their cover was blown, Hurley, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Juliet, and Jin met in Sawyer and Juliet’s home to discuss their options. Sawyer suggested they either leave the Island by submarine or head into the jungle to “start from square one.” Hurley supported staying on the island. Hurley, Jin, Sawyer and Juliet decided to pack and head for the beach.

As Hurley and Jin were walking out of their houses they heard the alarm and saw Radzinsky and two other DHARMA members tromping into the barracks with guns. (“The Variable”)

5×15 – Follow the Leader

After grabbing some DHARMA food, Hurley met up with Miles and Jin and escaped the Barracks. Dr. Chang had followed them and asked if they’re really from the future. Hurley denied it but Chang quizzed Hurley with questions relevant to 1977. Hurley struggled with the answers, being unsure of his birth year, the current president of the U.S., or whether the Korean War had yet occurred. Flustered, Hurley finally admitted that he’s from the future and Chang believed him. Chang revealed that he believed what Daniel told him about needing to evacuate the entire Island.

Later, Hurley, Miles, and Jin watched as people boarded the submarine, including Charlotte, her mother, Lara Chang, and baby Miles. They were about to go when they saw Juliet and Sawyer, handcuffed and being brought to the sub. Miles, confused, handed the binoculars to Hurley, who told Miles that Sawyer probably had a plan. (“Follow the Leader”)

5×16 – The Incident, Part 1

Hurley then drove a DHARMA van, accompanied by Miles and Jin, into the Barracks, where they rescued Jack and Sayid. Hurley drove them toward the Swan site, until they were stopped by Kate, Juliet, and Sawyer, who were blocking the road. (“The Incident, Part 1”)

5×17 – The Incident, Part 2

Jack and Sawyer left to have their ‘five minute discussion’, while Hurley waited at the van and looked after Sayid. Shortly after Jack headed to the Swan alone to detonate the bomb, Jin spotted Phil and some security officers heading for the Swan as well, and Sawyer, Kate, Miles, and Juliet took the van to go help Jack. Hurley was unaccounted for during the battle, but presumably he stayed with Jin and Sayid, and was with them during The Incident. With the detonation of Jughead he survived. (“The Incident, Part 2”)
