2×01 – Man of Science, Man of Faith
The father of Shannon Rutherford, Adam Rutherford was remarried to Sabrina Carlyle in 1992 when Shannon was only eight. He was driving his SUV (Four Wheel Drive) in late 2001 when he was involved in a head-on collision with a vehicle driven by Sarah Wagner. Brought into the emergency room at St. Sebastian Hospital at the same time as Wagner, ER doctor Jack Shephard was forced to triage the two patients, opting to attend to the woman, even though her injuries appeared to be more severe. While he treated her injuries, the intern monitoring Rutherford failed to properly intubate Rutherford and was unable to prevent the man from dying. (“Man of Science, Man of Faith”)
2×06 – Abandoned
Arriving in the ER soon after, Rutherford’s family was notified of his passing, with his time of death being 8:15 AM. His legacy would play out over the following weeks as his will revealed that his fortune was to be left soley in the hands of his wife, leaving his daughter without financial assistance following a cold dismissal by her step-mother.
